MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team uses Moverio Smartglasses as part of Global Partnership with Epson

SYDNEY, 23 February 2015 – Epson will supply the MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS Formula One™ Team with its Moverio BT-200 smartglasses for use before, during and after Formula One Grand Prix as part of its long-term global partnership with the 2014 FIA Formula One World Champions.

The Moverio BT-200 binocular, transparent smart glasses are well suited for sports, entertainment, manufacturing, the medical industry and more with each lens having its own display, right in the field of vision, projected into the user’s surroundings. The BT-200 also boast 2x the virtual screen size and work out-of-the-box with common connectivity technologies such as WiFi and Bluetooth plus Moverio OS apps that have been certified by the Moverio App Store. With a front-facing camera and motion tracker, the BT-200 is also a serious development platform for apps and hands-free scenarios, delivering large, 2D or 3D images.

Epson is now an Official Team Partner of MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS, also providing its expertise in the product areas of inkjet printers, scanners, 3LCD projectors and other wearables such as health/sports sensing products.

The global partnership also brings together two organisations with a strong commitment to minimising environmental impact. Epson, for example, aims to achieve a 90% reduction in CO₂ emissions versus the environmental impacts of current and future operations by 2050, partially by reducing the environmental impact of its manufacturing processes but also by reducing the impact of its products during use. The Championship-winning MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS F1 W05 F1 Hybrid car, raced by the team in 2014, was over 30% more fuel efficient than its predecessor and has also delivered real-world benefits in the S 500 Hybrid Plug In and other Mercedes-Benz road cars.

Epson’s next generation Moverio BT-200 wearable augmented reality platform smartglasses are also being used by some of Australia’s top education and research organisations including the CSIRO, the University of Western Sydney, Griffith University, Monash University’s Immersive Visualisation Platform and CAVE2 and Monash University’s Faculty of Information Technology.
