Epson plans special events at PMA Imaging Technology Expo 2007

February 2007

The Epson stand at PMA will feature the photographic range of Epson consumer and large format printers, Epson’s multifunction printers and scanners, and of course Epson’s multimedia viewers.

Printing demonstrations and print samples will highlight the outstanding vibrance, wide colour gamut, and incredible detail available from Epson printers using Epson’s Claria, DURABrite and UltraChrome inks.

Epson will be sponsoring the keynote address on the Print Technology day [Sunday 6 May] by renowned celebrity photographer Greg Gorman.

Titled “The Power of Imaging”, Greg will show and discuss his classic black-and-white imagery, as well as his philosophy of shooting digitally. He will also cover black-and-white conversion techniques, ways to enhance the black-and-white aspects of a colour capture using both Camera RAW and Photoshop, and demonstrate the Advanced Black and White Photo Mode in the Epson Print Driver using the UltraChrome K3 ink set.

Greg is a sophisticated and urbane fine-art photographer who is in the enviable position of having created numerous iconic images. His Hollywood photographs of stage, film and music personalities such as Sophia Loren, Al Pacino, Michael Jackson, Elton John, Leonardo Di Caprio, Arnold Schwarzenegger and many more have made him a star in his own right.

Greg’s enthusiasm for making images and his inside stories on photographing the rich and famous are an inspiration to all in the imaging business to realise their dreams in a commercial world.

Epson is also encouraging all photo enthusiasts and professionals to attend the address on Sunday afternoon by Henry Wilhelm on Image Permanence.

Wilhelm Imaging Research conducts research on the stability and preservation of traditional and digital colour photographs. The company publishes brand name-specific permanence data for desktop and large-format inkjet printers and other digital printing devices.

In his address Henry will cover the longevity of an inkjet print vs a traditional RA4 print; the advantages of genuine vendor brand ink over third party inks and the consequences of using each; and how much impact UV light has on an inkjet print.

Henry Wilhelm was a founding member of the Photographic Materials Group of the American Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works, is a member of the Electronic Materials Group of AIC, and was a founding member of American National Standards Institute/ISO subcommittee IT9-3 (now called ISO WG-5 Task Group 3), which is responsible for developing standardised accelerated test methods for the stability of colour photographs and digital print materials. He has served as Secretary of that group since 1984, and is an active member of the ANSI/ISO subcommittees responsible for storage standards for black-and-white films and prints.

Henry has also been a consultant to many collecting institutions, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, on various issues related to the display and preservation of both traditional photographic prints and digital print media. Since 1995 he has been an advisor to Corbis on the long-term preservation of the Corbis Bettmann photography collections in a high-security underground storage facility maintained at minus 20 degrees C (minus 4 degrees F) and 35% RH. With more than 65 million images, it is one of the world’s largest privately held photography collections. Corbis is owned by Bill Gates.
