In an effort to achieve the best possible prints, Epson has developed 16-bit printing for Max OS X 10.5 users. Standard printing is 8-bit, however the Stylus Photo R1900 can now perform 16-bit printing which means it preserves more detailed information from the original image. This allows users to reproduce prints with precise image control for smoother tonal gradation. Another advantage 16-bit printing has over 8-bit is its ability to handle greater amounts of retouching. When 8-bit printing is retouched heavily, often a 'step' like gradation can be seen.
